Case File
Frank Lucas is the subject of a blockbuster movie, also titled "American Gangster," starring Denzel Washington as Lucas and Russell Crowe as the detective and prosecutor Ritchie Roberts, who helped bring him to justice. In this episode of BET's "American Gangster," Lucas faces the camera himself and tells his story – with an assist from the real Ritchie Roberts. Growing up poor in rural North Carolina, Lucas became America’s most successful drug kingpin in the early 1970s, reportedly grossing up to $1 million a day. His career began as a driver and protégé of the legendary Harlem gangster Bumpy Johnson, but after Bumpy’s death in 1968, Lucas established his own connection to the ‘golden triangle’ poppy fields of Southeast Asia. As the Vietnam war raged, he shipped heroin to the United States, sometimes in the coffins of dead American soldiers. Judge Sterling Johnson, the Special Narcotics Prosecutor for New York City at the time of Lucas’ reign, called his operation “one of the most outrageous international drug smuggling gangs ever.” Several of Lucas’s brothers, known as ‘the country boys’ became notorious dealers as well. After Lucas was brought down in 1975, he helped prosecutors like Roberts dismantle his own network, but has never revealed the whole story of what he did and why he did it – until now.

Rap Sheet

Names: John Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo
Reign: 2002
Business: Domestic Terrorism
Region: Washington, D.C. area
Claim to Fame: shattered the image of the White, male serial killer.
Downfall: bragging on the phone help reveal their identity
Sentence: life without parole
Status: serving time in Virginia state prisons
Lesson: Just acting White don’t make it right.

Case File
In October, 2002, the ‘D.C. Snipers’ introduced a new kind of terror to the US. public. For three weeks, the killers shot people at random - ordinary citizens doing the most mundane things - shopping, pumping gas, waiting for a bus. No one was immune, and no activity was safe. Six million people across two states and six counties were in the crosshairs, traumatized by two psychopaths on a private jihad. All the experts assumed that a single White male was behind the killing spree - that¹s the typical profile of a serial killer, but the D.C. Snipers turned out to be an African-American man and his teenage sidekick, stereotype busters of the creepiest kind. Between shootings, the killers communicated with authorities in a cat-and-mouse dialogue, dropping clues that included a Tarot Card with a skeleton on a horse and the words "Call Me God" scrawled across the top. The real story behind the carnage turned out to be as shocking as the bloodshed. John Muhammad, 42, was a deranged dad on a mission to get back his kids. Lee Boyd Malvo, 17, was a
homeless juvenile desperate for a father – who John Muhammad methodically transformed into a boy soldier. Incredibly, the killings were all a smokescreen to camouflage Muhammad's ultimate target-- his estranged wife.
